St. Peter's Square |
The monumental elliptical square of St. Peter is undoubtedly the masterpiece of Gian Lorenzo Bernini, designed and built between 1657-1667, during the pontificate of Alexander VII and of Clement IX. The facade of St Peter, designed by Carlo Maderno and built between 1608 and 1612, is huge; it measures 118 by 48 meters (387 by 157 feet). The eight massive columns of the facade are almost 10ft wide and 90 feet high. |

The Sistine Chapel |
The Sistine chapel (Cappella Sistina in Italian) is located at the southern end of the Vatican Museums and at 5 minutes walk from St. Peter's Basilica. If we look it from the outside, the Sistine Chapel is of no great architectural interest. The chapel has a rectangular shape and measures 41 x 13 meters (134 x 43 feet) and was built using ordinary bricks. The chapel is 20.70 meters high (68 feet) and has a barrel-shaped roof. As we said, there is nothing spectacular about the building itself. All its beauty is in fact on the inside amazing frescos. |

Piazza Navona and Four Rivers fountain |
The Piazza Navona is one of the most beautiful and characteristic Baroque square in Rome. The main attraction of the square is undoubtedly the fountain of the four rivers. The palace of Pamphilj, the church of S. Agnese in Agone and the other two fountains are still admirable elements of this picturesque square. |

St. Angel's Castle |
Located only few hundred meters west to St. Peter's square is St. Angels Castle. Originally it was the tomb of Hadrian and was erected between 130 and 139 A.D. as a mausoleum for himself and his family. It was finished almost one year after the death of emperor Hadrian. In order to have an easy access to the building from the area of Campo Marzio a bridge was built crossing the Tiber river, which was inaugurated in 134 A.D. |
